OLWC’s 2025 “Soil Your Undies” Challenge!

Did you know that soil is a bustling community of life? Beneath your feet, trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and earthworms, are working together to create a healthy, thriving ecosystem. These organisms play a crucial role in soil health, breaking down organic matter, cycling nutrients, and supporting plant growth. So, how can you tell just how healthy your soil is?

The “Soil Your Undies” challenge is a fun, hands-on way to find out!

Soil experts emphasize that soil is not just dirt—it’s a living environment. Healthy soil is a vibrant ecosystem where microorganisms and organisms work in harmony. These tiny creatures are essential for the decomposition of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients, keeping the soil fertile and full of life. The more active these organisms are, the healthier your soil will be for plants and other life.

Here’s where the cotton underwear comes in…

Farmers and scientists across the country have been using cotton underwear to measure soil health. Why? Cotton is made of cellulose, which soil organisms love to break down. When you bury a pair of cotton undies, microorganisms in the soil start feasting on them. The healthier the soil, the more decomposition will occur. After about two months, the level of degradation in the undies will show you just how active and healthy your soil community is!

Get to know your soil

Join us for the 2025 “Soil Your Undies” Challenge…

…and learn more about the health of your soil. We’ll provide the materials (cotton undies, instructions on how to bury them, and flag markers so you can find them again); all you need to do is follow the instructions, bury the undies, and see what happens! After two months, dig them up, take a photo, and share your findings.
